Yes, it is time for the federal government to end discrimination against same-sex couples and to grant them the same legal status as heterosexual married couples under the law. This includes the need for a federal domestic partnership statute which grants same sex couples the equivalent economic benefits of heterosexual married couples, including the right to the significant tax benefits afforded to married couples filing jointly. To do otherwise continues the incidence of deliberate statutory discrimination against same sex couples who wish to enter into responsible, legally committed relationships. These committed same sex couples are no less a part of responsible society and family life than couples of the opposite sex who wish to enter into legally committed relationships.
