The debate on the appropriate treatment of partnership carried interests continues. As readers may recall, Citizens for Tax Justice (CTJ) publicized an effort to have various non-profit groups sign off on a letter urging a change in the tax treatment of carried interests. The special concerns for nonprofits in this context include tax fairness issues and appropriate determination of the tax base if the rules appear to allow a large group of very highly compensated persons to manipulate their tax treatment.
Briam Gumm for OMB Watch and Steve Wamhoff for CTJ issued a press release this morning announcing the delivery to Congress of a letter demanding equitable tax treatment of carried interests. The letter has been signed by more than 300 different groups--including unions, advocates for families, faith-based organizations, and tax policy organizations. The letter and the list of signatories is available at the following link.
