Nina Olson has told Congress again that private debt collection of federal income taxes does not make sense or cents. The "experiment" has cost the U.S. government $81 million a year so far, she says, when you consider what is paid for the little returns, and the way the IRS could use those funds to do its job better and collect more. The program brought in about $32 million last year and is expected to do only about 2/3 that much in 2008. The original claim was that $150 to $220 million a year.
